Q: Can I share your articles and free patterns with others?
A:
Yes! We do own the copyright on all our articles and patterns,
but will allow you to print or photocopy extras to share with
friends and associates. You can even include them as part of
your club's orientation pack for members. We ask that you
respect our intellectual property rights and follow these simple
guidelines:
- Keep them free.
You may recoup actual
photocopy costs only. You may not sell or include the
articles in any publication or anthology that will be sold.
- Keep them intact.
Our copyright notice
will automatically print with each article. Please photocopy
extras as they print out.
- Keep us in contact.
Don't load copies of
our articles or patterns onto other websites or file-sharing
systems without our written consent. It's best to simply
give interested people our website address, and let them print the
most up-to-date versions of the articles for themselves. You
are welcome to include links back to us from your website or blog.
- Keep them non-commercial.
We do not
license our patterns (online or print versions) for commercial
use. You may use them to make items for yourself, your
family, and your friends, but do not use them to make items to
sell.
Q: Where do I find the free patterns and articles?
A: Visit
Great Auntie Maude's Curious Compendium of Mid-19th
Century Knowledge.
Q: I can't open the free patterns and articles! What do I
need to do?
A: All our free patterns and articles are in PDF format.
You'll need the free version of the Adobe Acrobat reader installed
on your computer in order to view and print them. You'll find
a link to the Adobe site on any page that has PDF format articles to
download. Keep in
mind that PDF files can take a minute or so to download and open,
depending on your internet connection.
Q: Do you publish women's dress patterns?
A: We don't.
There are several quality historic pattern
publishers we admire, and we refer you to their work in the
Links
section of the Compendium. We publish dressmaking manuals, to
teach you how to get the most use from your historic pattern, or to
drape your own pattern right on the living human figure. You
may use our books alone, or in conjunction with quality historic
patterns.
Q: Will you sew clothing for me?
A: I do not generally accept commissioned work at this time.
Visit the Links section of the Compendium for connections to
reputable professional sewists I think you'll enjoy working with.
If you like, you can provide your sewist with your purchased copies
of our Historic Moments patterns, to be used constructing clothing
for your family (you retain ownership of your purchased patterns,
and pay her for her labor and time.)
Q: I have a question about my clothing project. Can you
help?
A: Yes!
Please feel free to email me at
Elizabeth@TheSewingAcademy.org, drop me a line through the
Guest Page, or visit our
"tech support" forum,
The Academy @ Home. I'm happy to give
support for any historic clothing project (whether you're starting
with our patterns or books, or another good historic pattern.)
